USS New York

This is interesting, and you would think it would have been widely known.
Update: The above image is of the USS San Antonio (LPD17). The USS New York (LPD21) is still under construction. Special thanks to mkdubois for letting me know.

With a year to go before it even touches the water, the Navy's amphibious assault ship USS New York has already made history. It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center . USS New York is about 45 percent complete and should be ready for launch in mid-2007. Katrina disrupted construction when it pounded the Gulf Coast last summer, but the 684-foot vessel escaped serious damage, and workers were back at the yard near New Orleans two weeks after the storm.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

"It would be fitting if the first mission this ship would go on is to make sure that bin Laden is taken out, his terrorist organization is taken out," said Glenn Clement, a paint foreman. "He came in through the back door and knocked our towers down and (the New York ) is coming right through the front door, and we want them to know that."

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, La., to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? - 'Never Forget'

I think the USS new york is a great example of american attitudes. Leave it to the yanks to turn a terrible tragedy into a weapon of war. honestly you've out done yourselves

This particular ship pictured is not the USS New York. The photos of the USS New York during it's celebration show number 21 on the front. The picture shown above is number 17 and does not have the 9/11 Tribute on the bow.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Lets waste enough money to save entire generations of poverty effected children, to make some truly cringeworthy 'statement' of greed.

Be oh so proud, you have a comical, floating, waste of money.

Kon -

9-11 was not a terrible tragedy - it was an act of war... grow up.

The USS New York shows the world that, yes, maybe we can get sucker punched, and yes maybe it will make things topsy turvey for awhile. But it WILL NOT keep us from doing what we do best. It stands for American Freedom. And for those who think we arent supposed to be there or maybe this is a "waste of money" OPEN YOUR EYES!! Dont YOU remember 9-11, as a firefighter I sure do! So if you dont like the way its going I have one piece of advice LEAVE. We sure wont miss you!
GOD BLESS THE USA

Thankfully God does not love only America. He loves all of His creation, even though He definitely does not like the hateful way we often treat each other.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 Bible

This is interesting. I knew that the steel from the site was shipped to China and India by New Patiala Transport and sold into the largest steel market of Asia to be reused (it was used in the main stadium for the Beijing Olympics as well!).

So I remember reading in an interview that the steel was really thick, and still in very good condition but the fact that they used it like this, it's amazing! It's sends a really strong message to those behind the attack, especially that quote near the end concludes the thoughts behind which not just Americans but the world stands together.

RIP May God bless.

I would say to those countries that have an ax to grind with the Great Country USA. We still have more sleeping Giant's that are strong Patriot's, and don't you forget it.

Kon and Hmm: Assuming you both are not citizens of the US, it is safe to say that you have little idea and no concern about what is best for our country. Quit trying to feel relevant by asserting your opinion of the affairs of the US.
