ONE MEAN MULE!!!
A couple from Montana were out riding on the range, he with his rifle and she (fortunately) with her camera. Their dogs always followed them, but on this occasion a Mountain Lion decided that he wanted to stalk the dogs (you'll see the dogs in the background watching). Very, very bad decision...
The hunter got off the mule with his rifle and decided to shoot in the air to scare away the lion, but before he could get off a shot the lion charged in and decided he wanted a piece of those dogs. With that, the mule took off and decided he wanted a piece of that lion. That's when all hell broke loose... for the lion.
As the lion approached the dogs the mule snatched him up by the tail and started whirling him around. Banging its head on the ground on every pass. Then he dropped it, stomped on it and held it to the ground by the throat. The mule then got down on his knees and bit the thing all over a couple of dozen times to make sure it was dead, than whipped it into the air again, walked back over to the couple (that were stunned in silence) and stood there ready to continue his ride... as if nothing had just happened.
Fortunately even though the hunter didn't get off a shot, his wife got off these 4...

Snopes says the story is true but not accurate.
"The lion was dead before the mule Berry took and shook the lion. A lion is a powerful and lethal predator and can easily kill a mule — however a mule can be quite an adversary."

From a website that knows mules.

Yes, a mule will attack a predator in this fashion. This is the same way a donkey would attack a dog or coyote, which is what makes (some) donkeys good guard animals. The photos are very graphic, but do show exactly the mode of attack a mule or donkey would use.
We would not say that the photos had been "contrived" or doctored in any way. Leah Patton, office manager of the ADMS, has witnessed similar attack behaviour between a donkey and dog, as have other staff of the ADMS, and other mule and donkey owners. In this case, the photos would be classified as "Genuine".

Did anyone not notice the snopes notice? They investigate things, ya know. The photo is obviously doctored, as anyone who's ever worked with imagery software can tell. Neat story, though.

What did you do when this was happening and what were you thinking? What did you do with the lion when the mule was done with it?

Mules and Donkeys can live off cactus and rattlesnakes and can be very, very mean and... well hard headed. It's no surprise to me that a Mule would attack and defend in this way against a predator. Like another poster said, that's why donkeys are used as protectors of sheep and goats in the field. They live with them and will protect them from predators and yes, that does include bears and lions, but mainly coyotes, dogs, and wolves.
I would not bet on a Mule vs. a Lion. But I would give a mule a good enough chance to pay for the seeing the fight. As to this being doctored.. You know I've been using photoshop professionally going almost 20 years working with images daily. This a complex scene, I doubt it. This mule's posture, position on the slope, the logistics, this would take a hollywood studio to fake, not just a guy with a mouse.

Snopes says this mule is "Barry", probably about 11 years old now. A 25-year-old hunter named Jody used the mule as a pack animal when she went hunting, and the mule became more aggressive towards dead lions over time. The photos are genuine, from 2003 or so, but the lion was already dead.
Mules are tough, but a lion is an apex predator that sometimes eats herd animals. No doubt a lot of cats have been badly injured from being kicked, but grabbed from behind? Not likely- any normal herd animal will be facing the other way, running.
I remember seeing video of African lions with broken bones from attacking zebra from behind, which are about the size of mules. An African lion is about three times the size of a cougar. No doubt, a good kick could lead to death by starvation, or even directly with a crushed skull. It'd be a lucky shot, though.
I'd bet on a cat avoiding such possible injury and preferring an old, young, sick or injured mule/horse.

Horses and mules can be pretty confrontational. You have to remember that mule is probably 5 times stronger or more than a little cougar. Ever been chased by a horse? I have. Ever had one pick you up with their head? I have. All I was doing was holding the reigns for someone to take a picture of the person riding it. My aunts horse would chase us out of the corral after we rode it and bite the shit out of us. Ever seen horses fight? I have seen that too and wouldnt want to be on the receiving end. I dont know though, its a funny story and not totally unbelievable.
You have to remember that the mules foot is probably as big as that cats head. No aim is necessary for a kill; head shot, collapsed lung, broken neck, back, ruptured heart, lots can happen when a leg strong enough to carry several hundred pounds with a steel shoe on it hits you or steps on you.
Why do you think riot police use them, or why do you think they rode them in battle in the past. Horses arent peaceful grazing animals, they can defend themselves.

HUH? A cougar can break bones with a casual flick of its paw. We knew a gentleman that saved wolves, we even bought one off of him, and he had a sweet cougar for a pet. That pet, being playful, accidentally broke the right leg of one of their friends with a single playful swat.
5x stronger my hairy arse, this is news because it's so unusual, not because mules are somehow deadlier than cougars..

*Just now notices Snopes bit* Well, that certainly makes more sense.
