Toilet in Houston - Could you use it?

Here's a picture of a public toilet in HOUSTON..

houston-public-toilet1.jpg

Now that you have seen the outside view of the toilet, check out how it looks from inside !!!

houston-public-toilet2.jpg

It's made entirely out of one-way glass. No one can see you in there. But when you are inside, it looks like you're sitting in a clear glass box. Would you / could you use it???

Freaky!

Where is this? Is it even real? All I have seen are the same pictures. nothing different.

Posted by: Jenn at April 11, 2006 2:50 PM

Hi Jenn,

Thanks for the comment. I did find this link on snopes: http://www.snopes.com/photos/arts/toilet.asp, which might answer some of your questions.

Posted by: Cube Dweller at April 11, 2006 3:26 PM

funny!

Heck yes, it would be a perfect place to read my book A Personal Tao / www.personaltao.com... while watching the world go by. :) ok ok no jokes about using the pages for something else if the paper runs low!

On a more serious note. One way glass really isn't perfectly one way. It can get pretty good, but not 100 perfect one way...

Posted by: Jed at October 23, 2006 3:02 AM

Yes, unfortunately Casey is correct. Whenever I see one way glass, I always cup my hands over it and hold it up to my eyes to see whats in there. If you cut out the ambient light and get very close you can see through. The main limiting factor is how dark it is on the other side of the glass. I'd imagine it's not very dark in this room since it's being flooded with lights from all sides. It adds a whole new dimension to the experience, knowing that someone can just come up and look in whenever they want if they know the little secret.

Not in Houston, Texas, but Basel, Switzerland, here are the original sources:

Tsk tsk.
Oh yeah, mesothelioma lawyers are hard to find. But I guess that does not matter is you don't know what is mesothelioma anyway?

Posted by: Original Source at October 23, 2006 5:17 AM

Yes, it's real. We have one of these in Switzerland, too. There was quite a discussion about it because the mirrors might distract car drivers and cause accidents.

Posted by: LKM at October 23, 2006 6:43 AM

I would just stand there acting like I could see inside it. That should freak out anyone in there.

Posted by: tony at October 23, 2006 8:54 AM

Also if the ambient light is greater on the INSIDE - like at night with any interior light on inside the cube - it would be pretty much ONE WAY the OTHER way, that is everyone could see IN and you couldn't see OUT.

It's the same reason you can't see inside a window in a house very well on a bright day yet you can see everything at night with the lights on inside.

Posted by: Rootman at October 23, 2006 10:11 AM

I WANT TO HAVE SEX IN THERE!!!

Posted by: to at October 23, 2006 1:49 PM

I've seen (and used) this kind of toilet in restaurants. It's a bit disconcerting to be peeing whie you can see people eating a few feet away, but it's novel.

Posted by: Celia at October 23, 2006 2:24 PM

No way could I use this, I need to be alone.

Posted by: funkspiel at October 23, 2006 3:41 PM

wonder what sex in a one way mirror public toilet would be like brings new realms to exhibitionism

Spanktravision!

In the first photo....

Where is the woman's reflection?
Where is her shadow? (i see shadows from the trees in the background...but not hers)....

Posted by: Karl at December 17, 2006 3:36 PM

Her shadow is directly behind her, so you cannot see it, and you are viewing from the wrong direction to see her reflection

Posted by: Japa at January 4, 2007 3:46 PM

"In the first photo....

You fucking dimwit she is opening the door so the reflection isn't going to be straight on her, why the fuck are you making it seem like this is some fake thing when people have backed this up. It is in Switzerland, it is Real. Get a fucking life you fucking idiot, you're so fucking stupid. Fucking Moron.

Posted by: RIco at January 4, 2007 6:44 PM

Since when did asking questions make people morons?
I believe hurling torrents of abuse is a tool generally
reserved for the idiotic and mildly retarded.

Posted by: Randomer at January 4, 2007 8:38 PM

RIco...I am sure that all of your family and friends know that you're a hateful, babbling MORON and now all of the rest of us know it too...

Posted by: Rollo Jenkins at January 4, 2007 8:52 PM

That is so funny! I love it!

Posted by: Leigh Ann at January 4, 2007 9:56 PM

Scary, scary. I don't care who sees me, but I sure would hate to see some Mama Grossout squating, squinting, and squeezing as I passed by unprepared for the horror. Please,no!

Posted by: Rex Field at January 8, 2007 11:04 AM

I'm up for the sex idea!

Posted by: Rach at January 8, 2007 11:15 AM

You never know when you might be having sex in public! I learned too late that there was a security camera in the elevator room of a Washington hotel that was monitored live at the bar. The free drinks were appreciated when we got back to the bar.

Posted by: Clark at January 8, 2007 1:30 PM

Yes, I could use it. But I'd be a little worried about what some weird folk would be doing in there... You know, the guys in the bushes with the trench coats and dark glasses on...

Posted by: Aaron at January 8, 2007 1:30 PM

Fortunately as noted above it's not in Houston or I would have had to use it. If it was here, it would only be a matter of a week before it was destroyed.

I think I could use it,after all Ive always found it helpful to be able to see where I'm going.

Posted by: jason at January 8, 2007 4:57 PM

Hey, when ya gotta go...ya gotta go.
I'd use it.

Posted by: Russ at January 8, 2007 5:03 PM

I think you could get used to this - the Japanese in the past would not have thought twice about it being a problem, but the youngsters now are less stolid .... It would take getting used to for most Americans probably. And at night, when the light is on inside ... how does that work?

Posted by: Frank from Japan at January 8, 2007 5:43 PM

I bet the French would have no problem at all using this...don't they normally just take a wiz off on the corner of a street anyway.

Posted by: brntorange at January 8, 2007 5:55 PM

What happens at night? If there is a light inside, than everyone can see you take a dump at night!

Posted by: nickalota at January 8, 2007 9:28 PM

Hmmm...interesting how people react to this....
But there do seem to be issues...first, it's not in Houston, second, you can't really see a reflection of that one girl.

Me from India. Me thinks you guys are headed towards using the open spaces for going to toilets, as we guys have been doing for centuries!!!

Posted by: indianyogi4u at January 8, 2007 10:28 PM

Neat. Too bad that without vigilance this toilet would be destroyed by hoodlums.

p.s. Rico sounds like a paranoid sicko.

Posted by: Alex in Toronto, ON CA at January 12, 2007 10:53 AM

I would use it. I like the idea of looking out at people whilst relieving myself... any of these in the UK?

Posted by: Freeware Games at January 23, 2007 8:41 AM

Even if you cup your hands tho see through, you wouldnt see much cos the toilet is facing the corners so if someone looked through a side, theyd only see your legs, if ur a girl that is :D and another thing is that you would see them coming before they see you. Id love to use that loo haha

Posted by: lisa at February 27, 2007 12:58 AM

Hell yea...i would use it...like someone said earlier...when u gotta go...u gotta go :)

why so many comments about rico? and none about the retard who doesnt understand reflections and shadows? you americans are so hypocritical - you ban smoking but subsidise gasoline. Its time to ban obese fatfuckers from all public places.
